Maya glanced away from her computer, her phone was ringing. Unusual for the middle of the work day. Also unusual that it was a blocked number.
Might be a scammer, might be a recruiter. Maya decided she was bored enough that she’d take either.
“Hello?”
“Maya? I need you to find an excuse to get out of the building, without anyone getting worried.”
“Who is this?”
“You don’t need to know right now, and I am aware this is asking a lot, but you really need to be away from the office for the next half an hour. And you need to get out as soon as you can.”
Maya looked at the phone then brought it back to her ear.
“Okay, fine, I’ll deal with it. We’ll chat later though, yeah?”
“Very definitely and my compliments on that response.”
He hung up and Maya put the phone back down with a shrug.
“What was that?” Maya’s semi-boss Andrea poked her head over the partition.
“Just some organisational stuff for a friend’s party on the weekend.”
She looked around and stretched, “And now they’ve gone and broken my concentration, I’m going to grab a coffee, do you want anything?”
“No, I’m good, thanks though!”
Maya smiled and grabbed her phone, stuffing it into her bag as she headed for the lifts.
She wondered why her heart was racing as she caught a lift to the ground floor and casually walked out of the front door in the direction of the furthest of her favourite coffee shops.
As she turned the corner at the end of the block, she glanced back to see a large black car pulling up to the front of her office building, and men in black suits and dark glasses getting out.
She kept walking.
