“And yet again, I do all the work, and Janice takes all the credit.”
Maya slumped onto the battered sofa and took a swig from her can of beer.
Dylan was not sympathetic. “I’ve told you a million times, either don’t do the work, or make it so she can’t take the credit.”
“Oooorrrrr,” Maya grinned evilly, “make her wish she hadn’t taken the credit.”
“What did you do?” Dylan’s apprehensive look was marvellously satisfying.
“Oh, nothing to hurt the company, I want my job.” Maya drank more beer. “I just set everything up, then left her to it.”
“You mean the event’s….”
“Tonight, yes, and I’m not there. After all, it’s Janice’s event, she supposedly did all the setup work, she’ll be more than capable of making sure it runs smoothly.” Maya toasted her boyfriend with her nearly empty beer can. “And everyone at work knows I’ve got an unavoidable something on this weekend that means I’m currently travelling and won’t be able to answer my phone…”
“How many messages have you got?”
“Don’t know, I put it on aeroplane mode, so I’m not tempted to read anything.”
Dylan’s phone vibrated. He looked at the screen, then at her. “Janice says you need to call her. Now. How does she even have my number?”
“I have you listed as my emergency contact, so probably some HR policy violation. I’ll be sure to innocently ask on Monday.” She stood. “Another beer?”
